"... However, with this increase of racial and ethnic diversity, new challenges have emerged to promote greater inclusion for diverse students. With more diversity in the classroom, there is a desire by those traditionally underrepresented in the legal profession to have a greater voice in talking about, and more discussion around, issues that affect them and their communities. Students from all backgrounds are looking for opportunities to ask questions and share their perspectives on these issues and the law. Yet, many are reluctant to have these conversations in class for fear of reprisal or of being misunderstood, misjudged and mislabeled."
I happen to be a law professor who teaches Evidence and Torts, among other subjects. Colleagues brought THE DEFAMATION EXPERIENCE to our school because we believe it is important to stimulate meaningful discussions about race, religion, and gender, and to challenge all of us - students and faculty alike - to think about the impact that different perspectives make in the legal system. I just wanted you to know how absolutely terrific I think TDE is a vehicle for doing that. I believe our students were enriched. I know I was.
CARL T. BOGUS, PROFESSOR OF LAW, ROGER WILLIAMS UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW, BRISTOL, RI
This, to me, was about starting the conversation. There's no better time to really grapple with these issues and I think DEFAMATION is a great platform to do that.
TROY RIDDLE, CHIEF DIVERSITY & INCLUSION OFFICER, JOHN MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL, CHICAGO, IL
As Western society grows increasingly multicultural, we often forget that 'diversity' means more than skin color, religion, or national origin: it includes the diverse ways in which we perceive and react to even the smallest aspects of daily life. Dramatically demonstrating how two people of different backgrounds may respond to exactly the same experience in entirely different ways, THE DEFAMATION EXPERIENCE: This event will educate, entertain, and inspire audiences as diverse as high school civics classes or groups of lawyers and judges, and its tightly scripted and professionally-performed courtroom scenes provide practical tips for even the most experienced trial lawyers. See if yourself first, then book if for your organization; you will walk away a better and more caring person and will help educate and sensitize the next generation of Americans.
DAVID APPLEGATE, PRESIDENT, 2012-2014, CHICAGO LINCOLN AMERICAN INN OF COURT, CHICAGO, IL
The play is extraordinarily well written-- provocative and engrossing, subtle yet resolutely inviting (if not demanding) that we reflect upon our prejudices. The discussion with the actors following the play is integral to the production and brilliantly enhanced the experience.
SUSAN CONNOR, PROFESSOR OF LAW, THE JOHN MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL, CHICAGO, IL
THE DEFAMATION EXPERIENCE is a smart, compelling, thought-provoking courtroom drama, which challenges audiences to re-examine their preconceived ideas about race, religion and class. I highly recommend it for everyone.
LAUREN BETH GASH, ATTORNEY-AT-LAW & CHAIR, JUDICIARY COMMITTEE, ILLINOIS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES (1997-2001)
From the first five minutes of THE DEFAMATION EXPERIENCE to this moment I have been considering the circumstances and the culture issues. It is an incredibly thought-provoking program that I enjoyed from beginning to end.
JOHN FRIEDMAN, ATTORNEY-AT-LAW
